# Steam moves and reverse line movement: what they are and how to spot them

> A steam move is a fast line move in the same direction across many sportsbooks. Reverse line movement is a line moving against the side most bets are on. Both are read from price history: where the line opened, which book moved first, and how far the others followed.

## Definitions

- **Line move.** A sportsbook changes its line or price on a market, usually because money came in on one side or news changed the game (an injury, a lineup, the weather).
- **Steam move.** Several books move the same line the same way within minutes. It usually starts at a book that takes large bets and sets its own prices, and the rest follow.
- **Reverse line movement.** The line moves toward the side that fewer bettors are on, which suggests larger or sharper bets on that side. Spotting it needs ticket and money percentages, which books publish only in part; the price side is visible in line history.
- **Closing line value (CLV).** Getting a better price than the line closes at. Over many bets it is the most reliable sign of an edge.

## How to spot a steam move

1. Compare the opening line with the current consensus. A move of a point or more on an NFL spread, or several points of win chance on a moneyline, is a real move.
2. Check which book moved first and how fast the others followed. A move that starts at a market-making book and spreads within minutes is steam; one book drifting alone is usually that book balancing its own risk.
3. Find the books that have not moved yet. Until they do, they hold the old number, which is the best price on the side the market is moving toward.

## What BetWatch data shows

- When Bet105 moved a game line, the rest of the market moved 54% of the way toward it by kickoff, the most of 23 books and prediction markets (2,747 moves, September 22 to October 5, 2026).
- BetUS (40%), theScore Bet (38%), Hard Rock Bet (37%), ProphetX (37%) and FanDuel (31%) came next.
- Pinnacle, the book most often called the sharpest, moved 16,485 times. The market followed it 24% of the way, but Pinnacle kept 88% of its own moves through kickoff: its moves stick even when others are slow to copy them.
- Prediction markets were followed least: Polymarket 2% (39,978 moves), Kalshi 16%, Novig 20%.
- The biggest US books sat in the middle: DraftKings 23%, BetMGM 25%, Fanatics 28%, FanDuel 31%.
